This term has seen The Link pupils taking part in a number of sporting endeavours. Below is a summary of the main activities we have done so far this year.
Learn to Swim:
For the second year running, our pupils are taking ‘Learn to Swim’ classes at the Westcroft pool. Every Tuesday two classes head
down for a 30 minute lesson with our able instructors, Victoria and Emma. The classes are split into our more capable swimmers who work in the deep end, and our novice group, who work on stroke correction and basic position, in the shallow end.
Classes will each have a full term of coaching, with the next rotation due to take place in January, at the start of the Spring term. Autumn has seen Johnson and Fuller classes swimming. Rowsell and Wood will be swimming in Spring and Fuller, Weir and Yates will be swimming in the Summer term.
Bike riding:
At the end of last year we had our fleet of nine mountain bikes and two tricycles fixed in preparation for this year. We have relocated them to Carew Academy. This allows us to bike ride in the gorgeous Beddington Park, away from traffic.
Pupils have made huge improvements in their bike riding ability. The greatest achievements has been by those pupils who have
never ridden before, or have not ridden for a large number of years. We had an almost 90% riding success rate with pupils by the end of the programme. This ran during PE lessons for most of the Autumn term (weather permitting). With the cold weather upon us, we have put the bikes under wraps and are hoping to restart the pupils on cycling after Easter.
Sports Carnivals:
We have already had our Cross Country carnival in September in Beddington Park. Our next carnival is planned for January and will be centred around swimming. Once we have confirmed a venue we will let you know the details. The plan is for traditional swimming events for our more able swimmers as well as “running” races and other events for our less confident swimmers.
