Speech and language therapy is school-based and made up of two part time and two full time therapists. They have degrees or post graduate diplomas in Speech and Language Therapy, belong to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
Therapists are involved in assessment, diagnosis and management of speech, language and communication needs as well as eating and drinking difficulties.
How is Speech and Language Therapy delivered?
A speech and language therapist is assigned to each year group in order to support each class group in differentiating the curriculum and providing advice and strategies.
Speech and language therapy intervention is delivered through one to one, paired or small group work depending on the areas identified by our initial assessments and the provision detailed in each student’s Statement of SEN or EHCP.
Students’ individual therapy programmes are devised and offered according identified areas of need. These programmes develop language and literacy across academic, social and functional contexts. Our therapists are trained and experienced in delivering a range of recognised programmes as well as resources that have been developed by the team in school.
The work of the therapists is integrated across the school day in order help students generalise their skills into ‘real life’ situations (e.g. lunch and break times, school trips, shopping, travel, sport, links with local schools and colleges etc).
A full assessment for all new students entering the school is carried out and they are reassessed each year as necessary. These results are explained in the yearly Speech and Language Therapy report which is prepared for the students’ Annual Review meeting. Therapy targets are reviewed half-termly.
Delivering training and work experience
The team delivers parent workshops, staff training and seminars on a range of topics. Speech and language therapy students from local universities on clinical placements are supported by the Speech and Language Therapy Practice Educator. The speech and language therapy team deliver part of the Access curriculum alongside therapy colleagues.
