Speech and Language Therapy is an integral part of the school life across The Link sites. At the Satellite and Cottage sites, the Speech and Language Therapist works closely with the class teachers, occupational therapist, external professionals and SSAs to provide support to the students at a universal and targeted level. This collaboration aims to support the students in improving their speech, language, social communication and interaction skills. This includes advice for curriculum planning and differentiation, providing in-house training for staff, facilitating support for pupils with a PDA or Demand Avoidant Profile.

Speech and Language Therapy is delivered through a combination of:

  • Direct one-to-one work
  • Paired or small groups
  • Ongoing therapy interventions
  • Strategies implemented within the classroom
  • Liaison with the school staff regarding the management and generalisation of therapy targets
  • Supporting additional classroom activities and community visits

All of the above can be focused on each child’s special interest or commonly enjoyed activities in order to personalise therapy to best suit their needs.

The Speech and Language Therapist contributes annually to the EHCP paperwork by reviewing it and writing update/progress reports when needed. In addition, the Speech and Language Therapist may attend the Annual Review meeting to provide an opportunity to discuss the student’s progress and future targets. The therapist is available for other regular parents meetings with school staff and external professionals where appropriate.
