Occupational Therapy (OT) is an integral part of the school life across The Link Sites. At the Satellite and Cottage sites, the OT works closely with the Speech and Language Therapist (SALT), class teachers, special support assistants (SSAs) and external professionals to provide a wholistic approach to addressing the sensory, physical, mental health and learning needs of the students.  The support provided by the OT is inclusive of advice for curriculum planning, providing in-house training for staff, and facilitating support for pupils with a Pathological Demand Avoidant (PDA) or Demand Avoidant Profile.

Occupational therapy provided at the Satellite provides learners with support in one or more of the following areas:

  • Sensory Processing
  • Gross motor skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Handwriting
  • Visual Processing Skills
  • Play
  • Need for adaptive devices
  • Activities of daily living (self-care, dressing, feeding etc.)

Sessions are tailored to suit each child’s interests or enjoyed activities in order to personalise therapy to best suit their needs.  OT is also delivered through a combination of:

  • Direct one-to-one work
  • Paired or small groups
  • Ongoing therapy interventions
  • Strategies implemented within the classroom
  • Liaison with the school staff regarding the management and generalisation of therapy targets
  • Supporting additional classroom activities and community visits

The Occupational therapist further contributes annually to the EHCP paperwork by reviewing it and writing update/progress reports when needed. Additionally, the OT may attend Annual Review meetings to provide an opportunity to discuss the student’s progress and future targets. The therapist is available for parent meetings with school staff and external professionals where appropriate.
