Speech and Language Therapy is an integral part of educational life. Therapists work closely with Class Teachers, Occupational Therapists, external professionals and Learning Support Assistants to provide a whole school approach to improving the children’s communication skills, and to support their learning. Therapists work collaboratively with teachers in curriculum planning and differentiation and provide in-house training across the school.
On admission to the school, each child is assessed by the team of Speech and Language Therapists, and an individual plan for therapy devised. All children are assessed annually and reviewed as required prior to their Annual Review. Therapists provide a detailed report highlighting each child’s strengths and weaknesses and set individual therapy targets which are incorporated into their Therapy Plans or Individual Education Plans. Each child receives an intensive programme of therapy specifically targeted to their needs. Therapy is delivered through a combination of:
In addition, the Speech and Language Therapists attend the Annual Review meeting providing an opportunity to discuss the child’s progress and future targets. Termly parents’ afternoons allow for an informal meeting between parents and key staff involved with the child. Parents are kept well informed about the work carried out during therapy and can follow up at home when appropriate. There are also opportunities to attend parent workshops throughout the year. We welcome contact with parents and can be reached either through home-school books or by telephone.
